Newsflash! Tamara Rojo has been appointed the new Artistic Director of English National Ballet. The 37 year old Spanish Ballerina and current Principle of the Royal Ballet has been granted what will prove to be one of her most challenging roles yet. Whilst having no hands-on experience in directing a company, she has been in training at the National Ballet of Canada, where they hold director's courses. Rojo also sits on the Board of the Arts Council East, Dance UK, the ICA and the Anglo-Spanish Society. An intelligent and articulate speaker on behalf of the arts and ballet, it is interesting that she makes this next leap following such a successful career as a big box-office-pulling ballerina.
What is evident however, is that the ENB faces further funding challenges. It's current Beyond Ballet Russes season has been touted as a "box office failure" and has not achieved to pull the audiences it had intended. How Rojo will meet such a challenging climate will be interesting to see. Who knows, maybe this is what ENB needs? Someone young, with new ideas and a fresh look on ballet and where it sits in the modern world...
