Madelyn Lowe

The Tasmanian Ballet Company will be celebrating a decade of bringing ballet to the "Apple Isle" in June. For the 2012 Season, The Tasmanian Ballet will be presenting "The Sleeping Beauty". With a cast of fourteen dancers (three of which are trainees) it was with great pleasure when I discovered that one of the trainee dancers was none other than Tasmanian Academy of Dance student, Madelyn Lowe. I had once taught Madelyn a few years ago and have had the chance to observe this young dancer develop from such a young age.

At 17 years of age, on the cusp of completing high school this will prove to be both a fantastic opportunity for the young dancer to experience life in a touring troupe as well as have the chance to dance on many historical stages across the Tasmanian State.

What does being in the Tasmanian Ballet Company 2012 Season mean to you?
Being a part of The Tasmanian Ballet Company’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ I feel I will gain a lot of experience and it will give me an insight as to what full time dancing is like as I would love to pursue a career in dance. It is a great privilege to be chosen out of the 50 dancers that auditioned and to be dancing up beside international dancers also. It will be also be a great opportunity to be under leadership of new choreographers.

When will rehearsals formally start for the season?
Rehearsals formally start on the 18th of June.

Do you know any of the dancers that will be part of the Company this year?
Yes. Another student dancer that got accepted into the company I have been close with and danced at the same ballet school since we were 4. I also met 3 of the principal dancers from the company while I was in Hobart for the 'Sleeping Beauty' launch.

How will you juggle school work and dancing full-time for the duration of the Season?
It will be a challenge as I'm in my last year of college but as we get weekends off and finish at 5 o'clock week days, I will use weekends and nights to study and catch up on school work!

Are you superstitious? Do you have any pre-performance rituals?
Yes! Before every performance I watch the movie Burlesque! It inspires and motivates me to perform-you could say I'm pretty obsessed!

The best thing about performing in Tasmania is..
Being able to perform for my family and friends definitely!
